Been making regular pilgrimages to Dauphin Island for decades, but this was the first by self-flight! The Island is still the best place for a real get-away from the crowds, though it's reduced in volume but not spirit, and the folks have made a valiant effort to bring back the charm. Shame to see so many houses gone, but good to see many still returning! The runway is well-kept, and the ramp has plenty tie-downs with brand new ropes. Wind sock in great shape too. Not much else to report on, but we appreciated the Island's work to keep the strip up for GA!

I did not use Boardwalk. I just wanted to comment on the airport and island. The runway is in great condition. A few little grassy cracks but you don't notice unless you're walking the runway. The tie down ropes look brand new. There is no one at the airport so you're on your own when you get there. There is a phone number for a hotel posted on a sign that says they'll pick you up. Really cool runway to land on. The island is small, not crowded, very clean, white sand beaches and lots of new houses (thanks to hurricanes). It is so nice that a small town like Dauphin Island provides such a nice runway that really only GA can take advantage of. Forget the 10-hour ride in the car or the hour+ drive to the nearest commercial airport.

The Gulf Breeze motel is 1 mile from the airport, to the west on the main road. There is an eating establishment across the road and down from the motel, within easy walking distance. Be sure to tie your plane down because large military helicopters use this airport for practice hovering/taxiing, and the runway is close to the tie-down area. While standing by my plane, one of these giants came by and almost knocked me off my feet with the wind blast (not to mention the sand in the eyes).

Great place to fly into. Pelican Perch is closed for remodeling but Flamingo Fae's is also a great place. It is over at the golf course. They will come to the airport and pick you up if they have time. Phone 251-861-8808

Boardwalk's Annette and Beth will take great care to make sure you have an enjoyable vacation. "Island Time" is a great house... Right on the water. Enterprise out of Tillman's Corner will pick you up.
