10/24/07 - Prices are current, $3.89 as of my flight. There are NO flight planning services in the 'pilot's lounge' so plan accordingly.

Enterprise rent a car will pick you up, call 775-328-1671. Also there is a nice power outlet/extension cord on the north side of the white tank (fuel tank) if you need to plug your plane in.

Visiting pilots can find the pilots lounge door code at the self-serve fuel pump. (The big white fuel tank on the south side of runway 8/26) To get to the pilots lounge from the fuel pump walk south towards the fence and straight across to the mobile-home-looking modular grey building. Wind direction can change quickly, at this airfield, which leads to the traffic direction changing throughout the day. Flying at Stead since 1991 we have seen the windsocks at the ends of 8 and 26 pointing at each other many times. Listen to the traffic before you taxi or enter the pattern, so that you may conform to the general consensus of which runway to use.

Arrived on a Saturday with bone chilling windchill, and the pilot lounge was locked with no access to the bathroom! Fortunately someone driving the snow removing equipment noticed my waving and gave me the door code to the pilot lounge. The FBO should post the door code somewhere that a transient pilot would notice, or recorded it on the AWOS.

Pilot Lounge south of Fuel Island has restroom and snacks available. Aerobox above the airport has been approved by multiple layers of the FAA. The IAC chapter has the responsibility of notification all concerned of its operation. For others using Stead, I'd assume they were using it daily until about 1300 local. Airport manager loves to receive comments in writing, which he forwards to the local FAA reps. ILS construction continues into November 2006

There are full time restroom facilities available, but finding them is a trick. They are a long way from Aviation Classics and not well marked. Taxi past the grandstands westbound and turn past the police hangar (second left). This will take you to the wash area, and the restrooms are on the eastern edge. This isn't a walk unless you have quite a bit of time on the ground....

You may want to consider this airport a hazardous one as they have approved an aerobatics box right smack over the runway and often do not NOTAM or AWOS this fact, contrary to their certificate of waiver. You may find yourself landing while somebody (a student) is coming out of a loop directly above you. On top of that, the airport is full of low time pilots who all have their own idea of what a traffic pattern is. This is a user-beware airport as one pilot said. Also, don't expect the fuel island to be in perfect working order. Sometimes it is; sometimes it isn't. Yesterday the receipt printer was AFU, but that's only minor. Sometimes the hose won't wind or unwind, and sometimes the card reader doesn't work.
