Stopped for fuel 7/15/08. The AirNav and FAA AFD will be updated next cycle to reflect the new asphalt runway, 16-34, 2722' by 25'. This airport will expand rapidly with a new runway and become THE destination in the Austin area! Jim Craig is the manager and a fine gent.
Response from Jim Craig, Airport Manager, Bird's Nest Aviation Runway 16 threshold has been displaced approx. 1220 feet to the south, for a usable runway length of 1550 feet. The first phase of the airport improvement project is underway with runway construction to begin this month. Projected completion is mid 2009. Until completion of the project, expect men and equipment north of the displaced threshold. The airport will be attended and fuel will be available.

Although the pubs report the airport to be in disrepair, all the surfaces are newly paved and striped, and they now have 100LL self serve available 24/7. Dropped off a passenger on 9 July and had the opportunity to meet the new Airport Manager and see their plans for redevelopment of the property. If all the plans work out this will be the new hot spot for business and recreational aviation in the Austin / Central Texas area. Thanks for the hospitality and best of luck.

We flew into Bird's Nest this week and found it to be a great place to go anywhere north of Austin. The runway has been paved, the pilots lounge seriously upgraded and the people running it are first class. This airport is going big time and is sorely needed in the Austin area.

Cold water, sodas, and cheap fuel. What more could an airport bum need?

I can't say how surprised I was, but all the other pilots comments were TRUE! WHAT A CHANGE. And Jim was so nice to give driving directions for my daughter to meet me when I flew in. What small fields used to feel like!

This airport may bring back general aviation to the Austin area. Stopped by for gas today. They have 100LL at the price listed by the FBO. It is a small tank, but there are big plans for this airport. Thanks Jamie Jackson for taking the time to visit with us. Although there is just fuel and a friendly face there right now, that will change in the future. The current pilot lounge is worth seeing, especially if you ever visited it before its current face lift. With a fourteen month projected construction time for their new 6, 500 runway, stop often to see this often verbally maligned ugly duckling airport change into the equivalent swan very quickly. I understand the name may change eventually to Austin Executive. So if you wait to visit you may not be able to say you visited it with the current name of "Birds Nest".

I stopped by for the first time in many years. What a surprise! New paving on the runway, taxiway, and parking apron. Completely remodeled building. Self service fuel. They have plans to develop the property with a new runway, t-hangars, customer facilities, etc. Very friendly, and cost effective, stop.
