Flew into KAPV from KVNY this morning. Ate at Leonard's Cafe and the food was quite good! I like the names they have such as the E.L.T, which is a B.L.T. And the NTSB. The winds shift a lot down near Victorville so it is amusing to fly in that area. The gas prices were cheaper than I have paid in a long time, however it was really hard to get the fuel! You have to remove the "nozzle" which is under the fuel hose housing receptor.... Then be sure to hold the handle on the fuel hose for 6 seconds till fuel begins to pump. If you don't the fuel machine will time out...I had the Airport Op's come out on his golf cart and he was nice and helped a bunch as we soon went on our way.

My wife and I had to divert to Apple Valley due to weather on our trip home to Fullerton from Henderson. I cannot say enough about how nice everyone was at this airport. The staff at Leonard's Cafe offered us a free meal; a local soldier gave us a ride to a motel for the night, and a veteran pilot helped me with a few mechanical issues the next morning at 7am. Thank you Apple Valley residents for turning our negative experience into a positive one.

Flew to APV yesterday (11/17/07) to meet with other Grumman owners for lunch at Leonard's Cafe. The airport and restaurant make for a nice visit, and the folks at the restaurant are most friendly and courteous. Good food as well! As for the airport, a couple of lessons learned: (1) Self-serve fuel was higher priced than advertised here on AirNav.Com. The listed price on here was $3.20 per gal. but the actual price was $3.54 per gallon. (2) If you click on the mike 3x on the airport CTAF freq. (122.8), then you'll get an ASOS weather blurb with the winds, altimeter, etc.. (3) If no wind, use Rwy 18, especially during high-density altitude departures. If you use 36, you experience a fairly significant upslope (few, if any man-made obstructions though) in terrain as you climb out upwind to the north, with mountains ahead, west and east. Using 18, you get a reasonable down slope during climb out. Otherwise, APV is a nice, quaint place to visit. We'll visit again!

Bought fuel there Sunday afternoon at the SS Island. $3.67/gal. Had a minor problem getting pump going--someone immediately stopped and got things sequenced so the show could go on. Nice runways. Although runway 36 is officially listed as 1.5 degrees up, it visually looks steeper.

BUYER BEWARE!!!! I purchased fuel from Aztec on 05-10-06. To my surprise, the price that was listed on the board under the Chevron sign was $4.24 per gallon. The price that came up on the receipt was $4.32 per gallon. For my purchase, the difference was $2.89. Now, it is not the $2.89 that bothers me as much as when I called the company and told them about the problem. They returned my call and made excuses for not updating the price sign. They did not even offer to reimburse me the $2.89. California has a law against this.
Response from Brandon Legeness, Aztec Aviation Don't believe everything that you read. Aztec Aviation may be a bit high but the service is excellent. When you purchase fuel from the truck you get the whole full service. They wash your windows, check your oil and check the air in your tires. If you love to fly then fuel prices should not be a problem.
