We also recommend Ely Jet Center and Car Rental as being friendly and helpful. From the air it doesn't look like there's much here but we had a great 3 days in late April with pleasant weather in the 40-70's with fresh dusting of snow on the mountains in the morning. There is a small town feel and specific attractions we did - rail museum with steam train ride, Great Basin Nat'l Park w/Lehman Caves & bristlecone pines, largest copper pit mine, ghost towns, rock hounding. Hotel Nevada is a winner as a nostalgic family friendly hotel & casino.

Stopped in Ely for fuel. Not much else around these parts other than rugged terrain. The folks at the FBO jumped out of their skin so happy to see someone and did everything possible to make my short stay efficient and pleasant. Will definitely be back here again, although I don't think departing here at night without a good climb rate and TAWS would be wise.

We diverted to Ely due to weather. The Jet Center folks were very accommodating despite the FBO renovation in progress. They offered us a crew car to take into town, use of their computer, and access to their wi-fi service. The fuel price was reasonable, and Maggie explained that the $5 overnight fee is courtesy of the county, so it can't be waived. (Though we didn't end up staying overnight, we were told about several good hotel options for around $50-60.) Two tips: Ely is in a valley, so be careful about getting stuck there if you divert due to weather, and make sure you can drive stick if you want to use the crew car!

Dropped in to Ely for an overnight stay en route. There's no self-serve, which isn't a problem during the day. The FBO is very pleasant and efficient. They do charge $5 for an overnight tie down, whether you buy fuel or not. The FBO does not open until 0800, so it's best to fuel upon arrival. They indicated that during off hours they would come out on request. Be forewarned, if you intend to depart prior to 0800, there are no facilities for that final bit of the personal preflight checklist, so plan accordingly. We stayed at the local Ramada, which is highly recommended. Very clean and the staff really goes out of their way to make for a pleasant stay. Nice continental breakfast at 0630. They offer a free courtesy shuttle to and from the airport. Best to provide an estimated departure time for your return to the airport so they can plan for it.
