My wife and I spent the weekend of 4/19-4/21 in Santa Ynez. We reserved a car through Hertz's local office in Buellton, who dropped off and picked up the car at the airport. The airport itself was as delightful as always. A new ADA-compliant wheelchair access ramp now leads out to the tarmac. As I was filling up our bird from the self-serve pumps, the pumps ran dry...So the staff promptly brought the truck over and completed the fill up at the self-serve price.

Santa Ynez is one of my favorite airports to fly into. Ask the FBO staff to call the shuttle van at the Casino to pick you up at the airport. The buffet is average at best. The coffee shop is a little better. When you need a ride back to the airport walk down stairs to the information booth and ask for a ride back to the airport. Then wait outside near the valet parking desk until you see the shuttle van. I usually tip the driver $3 each way.

Flew into Santa Ynez for a day trip to Solvang. The FBO staff was great and courteous and got me setup with a rental car without any reservation (same price as a cab would have cost round trip). The facilities were good, the scenery and people were great. Solvang was a fun town to visit for the day. Plenty of winery shops to visit, Danish bakeries, and restaurants. We got a local tip to try a place called Shelby Ranch off 1st street in Solvang. They have burgers, corn dogs, hot dogs and drinks all for $1 each. It has a Hollywood theme, the great thing is they donate all their profits to a children's foundation.

We landed today at KIZA along with friends following in a second aircraft. The crew at the FBO was friendly and helpful and the drivers at Promenade Cab were great. Our group was too large for a single vehicle and they were very accommodating for making extra trips and bringing in an extra vehicle while giving a great deal on the ride into Solvang. KIZA is a lovely airport--one of our favorite places to visit.

Santa Ynez remains one of my top ten all-time favorite airports in the U.S. We stopped by on 10-16-11 for lunch in town (a 10-minute walk away from the airport, although you do have to scramble down a fairly steep hill) and a quick gambling session at the casino (right next to downtown.) The folks at Santa Ynez Aviation were helpful as always. Their self-serve fuel pumps also include an air pump and a garden hose, in case you need to fill your tires (as we did), or give your bird a quick wash. Hertz rental cars are available, the pilot's lounge is nice, clean, and stocked with aviation reading material, and there's a fantastic lawn out front with big lounge chairs where you can while away the afternoon watching airplanes. Santa Ynez is really what GA is all about, and I wish we had more airports like it.

Visited KIZA to attend the West Coast Cessna 120/140 Club annual fly-in. The airport facilities are top notch and the staff courteous and helpful. The airport allowed members of the group to air-camp on the beautiful grass area right next to the terminal, which is a huge plus to those who enjoy air-camping. The Airport is well maintained, friendly to light aircraft, is convenient to both Santa Ynez and Solvang, and is well worth stopping in when you are in the area. Job Well Done!

Flew in on 3-10-11 with 3 passengers. I told only the fuel guy that I would be going to lunch for about 1 1/2 hours. I also told him to slide the fuel ticket into the slightly open door vent. Got to trust the fuel guys to some extent right? I might add that I locked all 4 doors on the helicopter. After getting back from lunch I come to find out that 2 Bose X headset were stolen from the aircraft. This took place during lunch hours 11:15am to 01:00pm. All this at an airport where one could count the number of operations during that time with your hands. I guess I should have known better and taken the headsets out, but come on in Santa Ynez? I suppose it is not just paradise up there. Needless to say that two of my 3 clients did not enjoy the 1 1/2 hour ride back home without headsets. Kudos to the FBO they gave me a few sets of earplugs. Yippee. One of the fuel guys was very nice and gave me a ride over to the on site Sheriff Air Unit Hangar. Thank you very much for that.

Response from Jim Kunkle, President of the Board, Santa Ynez Airport

Landed at IZA this weekend. What a great place. Beautiful valley. Airport was clean and well maintained. Took a cab ride into Solvang. Added this to my top ten airports in SoCal.

What a little gem! Came from the East & did a mid-field crossing (as Josh mentioned) then teardropped in to the 45 for the left downwind for rwy 26. If you walk to the end of the row of hangers to the northwest corner of the airport, just before hangar "J", there is a pathway down the hill. This serves as a shortcut if you want to walk to the little town of Santa Ynez and will take you to the corner of Edison and Mission Drive. The hill is a little steep, bring tennis shoes, our 4 year old was able to make it with a little help. We ate at the Burger Barn (which has a patio, and also serves breakfast), we were not disappointed, great food. I picked up some in-house made beef jerky from the Roundup Market right on the same corner mentioned above, for the trip back, wish I would have stocked up more, yumm. A beautiful 75 degree day in the middle of January in SoCal :)

I enjoyed a great visit to this airport last Saturday. The pattern was fairly busy when I arrived; two Cessnas doing touch and goes and one other plane (besides me) inbound. I was coming in from the east on a perfect heading for a long straight-in, but I did the right thing and overflew the airport at 2300' before making a descending left turn to enter left traffic for runway 26. Plenty of transient parking, and the gentleman working in the office helpfully called a cab for us. The fare was $18 into Solvang and the aebleskiver were two for a dollar (Danish Days special)!
