Leadville Airport is now managed by Zachary and the attention to detail shows. He has got his act together and is working on growing this airport. Fuel could be some of the cheapest in Colorado. Bathrooms are clean and always open. If you need something, talk to Zach or Kristie and they'll take care of you. Great service!

Flew in to KLXV on 8/23/09. The Self Service Fuel was cheap, and the heated bathrooms were open for business. It was Sunday and no one was there, but according to the signs we could have called if we needed something. I left just as it was starting to get dark, the runway is fairly long, but based on the size of the surrounding mountains, I do not recommend departing KLXV after dark unless you have an aircraft able to climb fast enough to stay well clear of terrain on the departure.

We stopped at Leadville today just for the experience and we were greeted by the airport manager, Debbie Benson. What a delightful lady. We chatted for nearly an hour before the winds looked to be coming up and we had to depart with certificates in hand. Oh, and the price of gas ... That is not a misprint. I really was $2.00/gallon. We took 15 gallons and cried because we dared not take more. Thanks for a great stop, Debbie. It is people like you who make general aviation the greatest!

The new airport manager, Debbie could not be nicer! We flew a Citation Mustang in for some high altitude work and Debby was unbelievably helpful--thanks again! The scenery is spectacular and the town picturesque. Just be careful about density altitude, gusty winds, and weather and you will have a wonderful time in Leadville. You will even get a certificate for landing at the highest airport in the continental US. A++, Highly recommended.

For over 35 years I have flown into airports throughout the East Coast, Midwest, Oshkosh, Washington National DCA, and also in Colorado. At Leadville I found the new airport manager (Debbie Benson) and her assistant extremely professional and helpful. The Leadville Airport and staff are winners. Lake County, you are doing a great job. I concur with the previous comment. Dan is gone and things are different. The county now runs the airport. The new manager is very nice. Unfortunately, as of this posting, they do not have a courtesy car and the taxi ride to/from town for lunch cost $40.00. That's too much in my opinion. There was also some question as to whether the self-serve fuel pump was going to work. The fuel pump eventually worked once the manager made a phone call. Also, all of the pictures and memorabilia are gone from the FBO. At this point in time, there are no landing certificates, no souvenirs, and no cookies.

Attention all pilots! A sad day for the friends of the Leadville airport. The county has taken over the FBO, and Dan and his wife are gone. Several planes have left and relocated to other airports.

I've been into Leadville several times, and am always impressed by the friendly service. Dan is always great to deal with, giving local info and helping out with fueling without being asked. Also local instructor Ursula has been great about sharing local flying tips for us non-locals. Added bonus is the mural on the hangar doors: it makes a great backdrop for your "I was here" photo. Highly recommended stop on your cross Rockies flight!

Best kept secret in the west! Nice airport, friendly folks, fun town to browse around in and a really kinky little courtesy car! Getting to town is half the adventure.

Diverted there last night (8/4/08) because my daughter wasn't feeling well. Got there after 5pm and the gas pumps had no power. Just as I was starting to sort through options (i.e. how much fuel DID I have left:), Dave pops over the hill and turns on the electricity to the pumps. Apparently they keep them turned off when a storm is coming through to protect them (smart move). Anyway, he was very cool and helped me out, offered a courtesy car (but we wanted to get on our way). Didn't try to push gas (a little pricey at 5.96, but hey it's very remote to get out there with the gas truck)...Even told me a story of a silly Cirrus person who insisted on more gas and used every inch of their approx 10K foot runway. Did I mention that Leadville is the highest elevation airport in the country? Dave will even print up a cool certificate with your name on it saying you navigated and landed at the highest elevation airport. All in all, a very cool stop. Thanks Dave!

Despite the altitude, I had no problems. I fly a non-turbo, 250 HP plane (a tb-20). The airport is out in the open, and the runway plenty long - even on a hot summer morning. In the distance you have Colorado's two highest mountains. Well worth the trip. There's no reception on Denver radio at low altitude, so call FSS to open your flight plan before leaving.
