Great folks here! Had to make an unscheduled stop here due to a vacuum failure, and their service manager took a look for us and pointed out to a shop in Destin since they didn't have the pump on hand. CSRs and the General Manager were great! Stop by and buy some fuel from these good folks!

The feeling that I had when I rolled up on the old Sowell ramp one more time was 'here we go again'. Sort of a dread, if you knew how many times I had been ignored and plied with bad service and high prices. Boy was I surprised at the service I got from SHELTAIR! The manager, John Williams, has created an atmosphere of customer service that rivals that of any FBO I've been. From the lobby counter to all the line service personnel, the level of service provided seems to be important. John and I talked about the level of customer service that I try to give to my passengers and he and his team have done nothing but exceed that level of service for myself and my passengers. The passenger's car is pulled up to the airplane and almost everyone working there is out to help get my passengers on their way as soon as possible.

We flew in to PFN June 1 to visit family overnight. Staff was friendly and helpful. Clean bathrooms! We visited before when it was Sowell, and are pleased with Sheltair!

Stopped by SheltAir this past Sunday on the way back to Tennessee from Sun n Fun in C182. We didn't need any fuel but the staff was friendly and allowed us to use the crew car to get lunch on the beach. We were not charged a ramp fee but we did tip the lineman. Nice FBO

I dropped in for a couple of hours. The courtesy car was taken but the general manager, John Williams, provided us with his car. The staff was very friendly and no mention of a ramp fee. I have always utilized SheltAir and have always been treated well. It appears some changes have been made but for the good. I would recommend speaking to John if by chance any problems do arrive. According to one passenger, "He's one good dude."

Fees too high and was overcharged for a Hertz car rental.

I fly into PFN frequently and am very impressed with the friendly and professional attitude of everyone that works there. They are always ready to go above and beyond what is expected of them and there is always a smile on their face. Service is quick and the updated services (i.e. computers and pilot lounge) are an added plus. Thanks

I'm a frequent visitor of Sowell/Sheltair, and I too was a little miffed about the ramp fees/min fuel purchase, but the FBO is finally coming around and it appears they are sinking the money into improvements. Very nice new crew lounge w/ LARGE TV and comfy leather recliners, new carpet, new furniture and they're not done yet. I just hope they haven't driven off too much business.

Response from Sheltair Aviation Services
SheltAir Aviation Services is dedicated to serving the best interests of the General Aviation community. After review of customer comments and feedback, COO Ed Zwirn has made the decision to eliminate all handling charges and minimum fuel requirements for single engine piston aircraft. We anticipate this will be a positive change in support of General Aviation at Panama City!

I agree about the ramp fee. I've come here several times during the last few months helping with CAP cadet O-rides and never once was the silly ramp fee mentioned. Yesterday I stopped to pick up a couple of CAP people to attend a CAP meeting in Marianna. Needless to say, I was surprised by the request to pay the ramp fee. We had a short discussion where I pointed out this was never mentioned before during our visits; they said it's their policy but they "waive" it for CAP as we're in and out doing O-rides and buying fuel. I simply said, "OK, I'll pay it NEXT time I come in" and I left. Needless to say I won't be back AND I'll be taking our local CAP business to the other FBO on the field. To be fair - in defense of the condition of the facilities. Panama City will be building a new airport soon (we just recently got the go head from the FAA) so I can understand the FBOs on the field not wanting to sink money into improving facilities in the face of being forced to move soon.

Sowell had been renamed Sheltair with new management and fees. 30.00 ramp fee or fuel purchase, minimum of 10gals @ $5.40 per gallon for 100LL as of July 30, 2006. Facility was nice, excellent service for what we needed. Pilot lounge with vending machines. Coffee and popcorn. It was a nice stay to wait out the weather!

While conducting cadet flights in a CAP plane-similar to Young Eagle flights, I made an unplanned stop at Panama City: one of the cadets was ill. After the cadet splashed some water on his face and had a 15 min break, we had to leave to avoid weather. The service woman said I owed a $10.65 ramp fee. I replied I was a volunteer and the fee would be coming out of my pocket. Even when the 2nd rep said they didn't charge CAP the fee, the woman was staunch. She said, "The fee is new, within the month, but it's our policy." She blankly smiled and blinked her eyes like that flight attendant from "Meet the Parents." I understand that time is money: yet understand that I volunteer over 400 hours a year to CAP conducting SAR missions, disaster relief, etc., all without pay. I also serve as a pilot for the US Army. I don't care for Shetair's ramp fee policy. I have some influence concerning fuel purchases for CAP and military aircraft; I will go out of my way not to visit again.

Stopped this morning in PFN just to clean the filter on our survey camera, nothing more. Not a soul to be found on the ramp, I just pulled into the first exit off the taxiway into a corner of the ramp to shut down the engine while the photographer climbed under the plane. We're about to start up when a line guy pops up out of thin air to say we need to go inside to pay a $10 service fee. Service for what? We had no assistance in parking, no one asked if we needed fuel, just someone to make us pay that stupid fee. I told the counter woman we received no services from Sheltair and she eventually waived the fee. The money is of no consequence; my company would pay it if we actually received services. Keep in mind, we were in a big hurry to beat the weather and shoot our survey lines. This was a completely absurd 15-minute delay. We will never visit these money hogs again.

I do professional and worldwide aircraft delivery. I see many different FBO's. There are 3 categories of FBO's. THE GOOD THE BAD THE UGLY. This one belongs to the BAD one. Incredible and record high gas prices compared nationwide and for the present time. Friendly staff but disgusting Management. Filthy place. No long distance phone calls for Pilots available. Staff is friendly. Their Boss or Management seems to be a punch of hungry money takers without serving anything to at least the folks (Pilots) he/she is dealing with. Therefore let me advise: DO NOT GO THERE unless you're forced as I was due to weather and fuel related issues. Don't know the other FBO on the field, but I learned they have a bit lesser price for gas and the other place can't have worse conditions for Pilots who are in demand for a short domestic long distance call.

From Charles Belcher on 12-Jun-2006
Now that Sowell has instituted a forced fuel purchase policy and ramp fees we'll move on.
