Not a good airport for non-jet pilots. The FBO rents planes dirt cheap for the valley but for fuel and tie down prices go somewhere else. Last December I called the tower for takeoff and they said hold, then called a jet at the far end of the runway and made me wait for them.

Flew in 2/28 for a 5 day stay with my 172. Didn't use any of the FBO's. Transient parking (Yellow T's) is in front of the main terminal on the west side of the airport.

Angel Flight West: I have been observing the available missions list; one of the more difficult trips to fill is into Scottsdale, AZ. There is a very good reason for this. Their fuel prices (per AirNav) are as high as $5.75 per gallon. Even with an AFW discount, it is still well above $5.00 per gallon. In addition they charge a "ramp fee" of $50 unless 50 gallons of fuel is purchased. Many airplanes (mine included) will hold that much fuel only if the fuel tanks are physically drained--obviously, one doesn't land with completely empty tanks (not legally, anyway). Many other airplanes can't even carry 50 gallons. While Scottsdale would be a very nice trip to undertake, most of us airplane drivers can't afford to be ripped off by obscene fees and fuel prices. Consequently, my advice to my fellow AFW pilots has to be to avoid landing at Scottsdale altogether, unless AFW can find a way to have the ramp fees dropped and get fuel discounts that bring fuel prices to a reasonable level

There is a $50 fee to use the ramp. The first person I talked to on the phone quoted a $10 ramp fee but the second call (after reading the comment on AirNav) the guy quoted the $50 price. After confronting him with the earlier quote he said I could park there for "a few hours" off the tie down area for $10. A real bargain for Scottsdale evidently, unless the wind comes up. The overnight fee was quoted as $5 per night and the fuel is over $2/gal more than SJN and a full dollar more than DVT so I passed entirely on the SDL experience. Looks to me like they are trying to drive off not only the "little guy" but also anyone who spends his own money. Cutter at DVT was great and even drove me to my appointment in Scottsdale in the crew van for nothing.

I used to go into SDL, but when I checked it out recently, I was disappointed. If you own a jet and have lots of money, it may be fine. But, they charge $50 (or 50 gal at $4.67/gal) just to stop and go into FBO (not even overnight!) I call this downright unfriendly.
