I visited Schuylkill County Airport recently during a trip to Pennsylvania. During the week prior to my visit, I was in constant contact with the manager Bill. We agreed on a day I could go there to rent an aircraft from their newly formed flight school on the field. After arriving I was greeted by Bill and another instructor, Greg. Both were extremely friendly and made my family and me all feel completely comfortable. I went up for a short checkout flight with Greg and then took up various family members over a couple of flights. We had a fantastic experience and I want to stress how pleased I was with how friendly and accommodating both Bill and Greg were. The airport itself is a nice, quiet, well-maintained field, and you quickly feel at home. I highly recommend stopping by if for no other reason than to drop in the office and school to meet the friendly people there while topping off your tanks!

Flew into Zerbey a few days ago for a meet & greet with the airport manager and the staff as we prepared to bring more passenger flights through the airport. Bill was the new AM and took over operations in Dec'08. He has a true love of aviation and of the airport and was just so excited to have more activity at the field. He and the staff made us feel very welcome and gave a tour of the whole facility, from snow-clearing utility, to aircraft maintenance, the main hangar was well kept and clean, and the passenger waiting areas were well appointed, missing only a TV.

Response from Bill Willard, Airport Manager

Charming airport with very friendly folks! Called the day before to inquire about services and fuel prices. All the folks here have gone out of their way to make sure I was comfortable during my stay.

I left a phone message about getting a courtesy car. Ray Green called me back, at his expense, within 1 hour and, although the FBO is close on Saturdays, offered an alternative: Eds USA rental cars. His demeanor was fine.

Ray Green, airport manager is in the process of destroying any goodwill from the flying community to the Zerbey Airport. He neglected to tell us we could not get our plane, set in the main hangar out until he was ready. He is abusing his authority and the resources provided to him from the county operating authority. He should be removed. With all haste. Aviation need positive people, Ray has been probably responsible for the lack of good commercial customers at the airport due to his mean demeanor and foot dragging. This should be investigated if the airport is receiving government or county funding. Ask some of the local pilots if you are skeptical. We declined to buy fuel there because of his attitude. A truly mean individual who seems to go out of his way to annoy pilots and aircraft owners.

HORRIBLE! I have never experienced such hatefulness from any individual in my 66 years! Ray Green, Airport manager, got mad when I asked for my plane to be placed in the transient hangar overnight, bad weather. When I came to pick it up, he was visibly angry. As I stepped upon the wing to get my maps out, he screamed GET IT OUT and started pushing on a NO PUSH area of the wing. Never stop here unless you enjoy hateful abuse.

Good fuel stop. Nice rwy, taxiways, big ramp area, & great self serve fuel price.

From Dennis Sysak on 22-Apr-2007
No fuel prices posted, when toped off fuel price had increased $.75 with self-service to $4.00. Beware of this field.

Flew in on a snowy Sunday. As per the posting on AirNav they are not open on Sunday. Almost like a ghost town, but fuel is self serve. Nice long runway.
