The Big Bear Pilots Association just returned from a great weekend at the Caverns. We had 9 airplanes and 17 people and we all had a wonderful time. If you practice good soft field techniques you should have no problem with the runway. The underground Cavern Tour was amazing. The restaurant food was amazing and prices were amazingly low. The prime rib was the largest serving I have ever had and it was incredibly good at less than $18. I saw the food that others were being served and the fried chicken and spaghetti dinner plates will be on my list for the next time I go. A Grey Goose Martini was only 4 bucks and beer was on special for $2 a bottle!! I plan to go back and just spend a few days relaxing in this picturesque high desert location (and do another tour of the Caverns!). If you are part of a pilot's association, I highly recommend this as an overnight fly-in destination. If you want more info from me, my email is donshade@aol.com

There is a 50x50 concrete run-up pad at the end of Runway 23. Runway is in good shape and you can taxi all the way to the motel. Great underground Cavern Tour, good Restaurant, Bar and Lounge.

Service was great. You taxi right up to the hotel, past the gas pumps, there are tie downs in the parking lot. You get some odd looks from patrons as you taxi by. Nice clean restaurant and the staff provides shuttle service from the hotel or airstrip tie downs to the restaurant and caverns. They do run a Unicom but information is scant. They will provide wind velocity and general direction. The windsock is tough to see; flags in the hotel parking lot are your best source of information. The strip is 45 foot wide and long enough however is covered with pea-sized gravel up to a couple of inches thick so don't perform a run-up. Make a rolling start with easy and slow throttle up on your takeoff roll. I spoke to them of the damage this size gravel can do to the empennage and props of the planes using the runway - hopefully they will grade this off. The strip is hard, level and in good condition - I landed on it with an Arrow 180 and would do so again save for the pea gravel.

Fun destination! We organized a fly-in event with 20 people last weekend and had a blast. Great, funky inn on Route 66 with the most helpful staff imaginable. Runway in good shape, just a little skinnier than some is used to. Our pilots had no problem, in a range of aircraft including a 152, 3 Skyhawks (one RG), a T182, T210, and experimental Chipmunk. Thanks to all!
