The appraoch to the airport is among the most challenging in California. When landing to the north you must fly around a hill that obstructs the field. I found the people friendly. The overnight fee was $8 for a single and the fuel was higher than average.

Garberville is not exactly "dangerous" but it's not an airport I'd suggest for pilots without mountain experience, even though it's only 545 MSL. Launching out of there on a hot day near max gross is no fun at all. Beyond the overpriced fuel there's nothing at the field except a porta-potty; there are much better places to stop on the coast.

Stopped by on 4/19/09 on a nice sunny day. The runway looks freshly paved, and the markings look new. We didn't buy fuel (it's rather expensive.) The town of Garberville is a 2.3-mile walk northeast of the airport; it took us 45 minutes. Had a nice lunch at the Calico Cafe. Be warned: there's not a lot of shade on the walk, and when it's hot, it's HOT. The right-hand pattern for Rwy 36 is a little unusual; you have to fly around a large hill, which means you can't see the airport on your base leg. Not the easiest airport to fly into, but the location is gorgeous.

Overpriced fuel, locked pilot's lounge, dangerous winds make this a disappointing stop at what looks like a nice little field. Gas was $4.50 here, and no phone or bathroom available on a Sunday. A very strong NW wind (50 kts at 3000') makes this a hazardous airport under certain wind conditions. Be careful with winds in here as the airport is surrounded by terrain, which is uncommonly close to the strip. This is a cute place and we were glad to have the fuel but these Humboldt County airports just gouge on price and give pilots very little support.
