Arrived in our Baron on Tuesday to find Herr Tavern closed Monday and Tuesday. Arrived just in time to watch the last "Blue Line" trolley pull away from the stop. Bummer. A lovely lady gave my wife, my three young girls and me a ride to town. Gettysburg is a great place to visit and no car is needed if you plan ahead. The Blue Line trolley makes its last departure from Herr at 4:30 on weekdays. The Gray Line and Red lines run till 8pm and later. So, once you get downtown (about two miles from the airport) you have it made. For restaurants we tried and recommend Dobbin House, which is near Cemetery Hill in a historic old house. The French Onion soup is a winner. For a very inexpensive, so-so buffet near the Park Main Entrance try Picket's Buffet. The Park is fantastic. President Eisenhower's retirement home adjoins the battlefield park and is open to tour. This entire town is a general aviation dream. Fly in, relax and have fun and forget the car. Self-Serve fuel available 24/7.

Flew in for a PSBA conference, left my Cardinal tied down overnight, no fee! Also was offered fuel BOTH Sunday AND Monday, so it seems that at least during the day, fuel IS available. Very friendly staff - however, for me at least, very difficult airport to see when approaching from the west.

As of July 09, there is a new bus service that goes out to Hunters Ridge, just near the Herr Tavern, that departs for town at 26 mins after the hour starting at 0800. It is $1.00 to ride to town, or $3.00 for all day - WEEKDAYS only, not WEEKENDS as we found out. Herr Tavern a good place to eat, and really the ONLY place within walking distance from W05. Nice airport.

Be advised that on Sundays, Herr Tavern opens at 5pm. The 'closed' sign at 1pm could have made for a cranky pilot and crew. Fortunately, the pub in the building to the rear of Herr Tavern ("The Livery", maybe?) was open and serving food, as we had worked up an appetite during the nice, short walk from the airport. One decent burger and French Dip sandwich later, and we were ready for a pleasant walk around McClellan and Seminary ridges; the battlefield is an easy walk from the airport, and the Herr Tavern complex is nicely situated midway. The airport, although largely deserted, does provide a great way to experience Gettysburg battlefield on foot.

Visited W05 on 2 May 2007. Deserted airport - no services. Runway in great shape - very smooth. There is no shuttle to anything from the airport - be prepared to walk. 1/2 mile to Herr's Tavern on a busy road with trucks passing you at 40-50 mph. Walk is historic - same route the Rebs walked to assault Gettysburg in 1863. Food at Herr's Tavern is good but now pricey - expect a $10 lunch minimum. Overall OK experience.

To get to Herr’s; take a right on the main road when leaving the airport. It's not a far walk and is located at the traffic light over the hill on your right. And the Cream of Crab soup is out of this world!
