Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport is the city's first airport and it is still one of the busiest. Dedicated by Charles Lindbergh in 1927, the Downtown Airport is just across the Missouri River from Kansas City's business center. Airport users have easy access to the metropolitan area and it is an ideal refueling stop for air travelers going cross country.

Prior permission is required for aircraft over 35 passengers, which the FBO can help in obtaining.

GA pilots not welcome here. Landed to pickup a friend and his son, chocked the plane myself, and they wanted $50 to let my guests through the lobby. What a racket. Line agent AND her supervisor were both totally rude and unhelpful. Go to the OTHER Side of the airport, where they treat you with respect, regardless of the size of your airplane.

Response from Frankie Taylor, General Manager, Signature Flight Support - KMKC
We believe the quality, safety, comfort and security of executive aviation travel should be reflected in the services provided by the FBO. Accordingly, Signature Flight Support facilities are designed and staffed to meet the highest service standards. To facilitate the equitable distribution of the costs associated with maintaining and operating our facilities, a Handling Charge will be applied to all aircraft. This fee can be waived with a minimum fuel purchase. This minimum fuel purchase is based upon size of your aircraft, which is 7 gallons. The CSR on duty upon your arrival did contact her Supervisor who authorized waiving the fee. We hope to earn your business when your travels bring you to MKC. Regards

Having been based at MKC for 26+ years at EB, Atlantic and now Signature, I have seen the best and worst of this place. Staffing has vastly improved over the last few years. Great, friendly CSRs, good line. Good Facility, TWA airline museum on site, passes available. Good access to downtown area.

The line personnel and front desk employees were very courteous but I was completely shocked that they charge a handling/ramp fee of $49.00 for parking my C-182 on their huge ramp for about 7 hours while attending a Royals game. This would have been waived with a minimum purchase of 7 gallons of fuel but based on the price of 100LL, 7 gallons would have been about the same price. I have never heard of an FBO charging this before. I could see a charge like this if I was staying overnight on a tie down or hangar, but to charge it for only being on the ramp for a few hours during the day, seems to a little ridiculous to me.

Went into the "GA" facility and no one was there. After a while I found a small sign that gave a phone number to call (this was mid day). Called the number and was informed that this facility was normally not staffed, to come next door to the big facility (which seems to be for biz jets). Got great service there including loan of a crew car (brand new KIA) to go to lunch. If you don't have a biz jet, park on the Signature ramp next to the Cessnaís and Piperís, then walk around to where the biz jet ramp is. You'll get good service and can order 100LL for your non-bizjet.
