From Sam Park on 24-Oct-2019

Stopped overnight on way to AZ from NC to wait out a significant cold front stretching from Canada to the Gulf. Originally planned for Collegedale (KFGU) but decided to divert since KFGU did not have any instrument approaches. I figured that since KAPT was close to Chattanooga it would have decent services and facilities. Wrong! We were the only transit plane on the field and the FBO shack was locked! Only activity on the field was a fairly thriving skydiving traffic. There was a Hampton Inn and a Holiday Inn Express about 9 miles away but no taxis, no Uber and no courtesy car (it burned down...). The people at the airport, however, were SUPER! One of the local guys unlocked the door and when Beth, the airport manager, came back from lunch she offered to take us to the Hampton Inn and had arranged for Bill, a local airport part-timer and pilot, to get us in the morning!! From here our stop was very pleasant. The hotel, the Mexican restaurant and the people in town were great!

We flew to Marion County Airport on June 29, 2019. We found the runway to be well maintained and the on-site manager helpful and friendly. We borrowed the courtesy car (an old, spacious, comfy Buick LeSabre) and drove just a few miles to a GREAT BBQ restaurant called Q 2 Go Barbeque, 5247 US 41. Despite the name, you can dine in. There are plenty of tables. The locals sometimes call it Blessings BBQ because it is co-located with a shop called Blessings, and the sign out front has both names. They claim they make "Award Winning Competition Style BBQ" and we believe it's true. The dry rub they used made the pork ribs so tasty we didn't even need BBQ sauce. Coleslaw and potato salad were to our liking as well. They also serve wings, pulled pork and other sides. Upon existing the airport, turn right. Take the next right toward Jasper. It will be on the right just in just a couple miles, before the overpass.
