I am a flight instructor in the area and my students and I practice at Castroville on a regular basis. The airport is very nice. The runway is well kept and the facilities are clean. However, I personally have had several run-ins with the airport manager, who regularly harasses my students and I, about not buying fuel from his airport. I understand the airport partly depends on fuel sales to operate, but this public airport is also federally funded. This means our tax dollars have already paid for our use of the airport. Why should I be required to buy fuel for the use of these facilities? This airport manager is very unprofessional, and he needs to understand this is no way to run an airport.

Nice place to stop in for a soda and fairly cheap gas. Tie downs are available and free overnight and really cheap if you are looking to park your plane there. Quite a bit of student activity in the local area, but a nice rest stop.

Sunday 7 Dec at 0900 hrs the credit card machine was FULL OF TRANSACTIONS CALL FOR MAINTENANCE. Went across the street to get info from man there. He stated we had to call the Castroville City Manager to come out. I wasn’t going to do that on Sunday morning. Had enough fuel to continue on this time. It was first time for me otherwise machine does work ok. Very clean place and facilities and close to town....

I spoke to the mayor after reading the previous post and he responded to the post about fuel. This is a special airport to me. I pick up my son from school there often. I like the friendly way I have been treated by all that are there and the effort the city is making to keep this a special place to fly to. The fuel problem has been solved. I have refueled there twice in the last several weeks.

I couldn't believe the self-serve 100LL fuel pump was turned off after hours on Friday - March 21st on the beginning of a holiday weekend. Some of us transients needed fuel badly. Thank god Hondo had fuel. I've learned a hard lesson and will call before flying there. Not a happy camper!!!
Response from Robert Lee, Castroville Municipal Airport Concerning fuel in March; we thought we had an issue with the card reader (the pump would give fee gas) and one of our folks turned off the pump until the problem could be solved but the fact it was turned off wasn't coordinated properly to the folks that publish the NOTAM. It was back up on Monday. We now have Bob Zarada, who has a plane at the airport, functioning as the part time airport coordinator. He is responsible to keep everything functioning and provide assistance as needed. We should have the courtesy car available soon when we work out a way to secure the keys after hours. The 931-0234 number in our listing is forwarded to City Hall. We are working to reroute this to Bob Zarata. You can call me if you have problems or need assistance. I can even loan you a junker if needed. Bob Lee, Mayor 830-931-5333 Leave a message in case I'm away from the city cell phone.

Once again, no fuel available, and no NOTAM about it. Call before you show up here!

Castroville is a great place for a weekend getaway. Great airport, very good price on 100LL, great terminal with clean restrooms, nice sitting area, flight school, modern vending machines, 2 nice computers with printers for WX. Looks like a brand new building. Lots of tie down area. Bring tie-down ropes in case the spots with ropes are taken. Just a couple of miles from the middle of town. Places to go to: Hotel Alsace for hotel/spa with great views, Landmark Bed and Breakfast (close to airport) for authentic 1800's feel on river, Castroville Cafe (perfect fly-in meal as it's only a few miles from the airport) for excellent food indoor/outdoor in rustic setting, The Station (and lots of other stores close to airport) for antiques and gifts. For more go to www.Castroville.Com. Some of the nicest people I've ever met. The Mayor rolled out the red carpet for us. Thank you Castroville!

Some updates on Castroville. Jet fuel is not currently available nor is the courtesy car or rent cars. Self-service system for 100LL is working fine. Glider operations will be moving soon. Pilot planning and weather computers should be working fine in the terminal building. Airport phone numbers are not currently working but we are working on that. You can call me directly if you have questions in the interim. Hope to get everything up to speed in the next few months. Robert Lee, Mayor, 830-931-5333.

Stopped by T89 on 6/14 to 6/16/07. Fuel was $3.70 and self-serve pump was working just fine. Tied down without problem and returned on Saturday the 14th, reviewed weather on the FBO computer system, then departed after a pleasant couple of days in good old San Antone.

Stopped in today and self-serve fuel setup was up and running. However, the field was unattended, and there was no Internet service in the terminal. As a result, there was no weather service available. The airport is still in marginal operation. The crop duster operation where the pilot makes no Unicom calls is something you need to watch out for!

I exchanged emails with the acting Mayor and the story is that the city is working to get the fuel system back in operation. However, no firm date and he said that the airport is not on a high priority list at this time. Apparently the feeling on the council is that too much money had been spent on the airport and what funds the city has is going to the infrastructure of the city (streets, etc.) The bottom line is that a once very nice airport is now relegated to becoming a second-class citizen.

You might want to think twice about stopping here for gas. I stopped Saturday 3/31 and found the covers off the pump and the card reader had been shut off. I'm hearing rumors that the city is trying to run the tenants out. It's a real same because this was a real nice airport at one time.

I was there at the end of last week and it seems the city is having some problems. Allegedly there is $500, 000 and the mayor missing. This has strapped this little airport and thus they are unable to purchase more fuel. The self-service pump had a sign on it "Temporarily Out of Fuel". I had also tried calling all of the phone numbers that they list on their answering machine before heading to T89. All of them were cell phones that were out of order. Someone was working at the FBO, but they decided to leave for the day before I could get into the building. Thanks for all the help. Guess they didn't want to hear an earful for not having fuel.

This message is to inform every pilot that there is a Glider operation based and operating out of Castroville Municipal Airport. Pattern for gliders is on the West side of Runway 15/33, while power traffic is on the East side of the airport. Gliders are taking off from taxiway 15/33, depending on wind situation, and will land on active runway 15/33. Towplane will drop cable in the Grassy area between runway and taxiway if no taxiing activities is taking place, and will land either on the taxiway or runway pending ground activities and safety. Hill Country Motorgliding & Soaring LLC, the soaring operator, would like to thank the city of Castroville and all its officials for the warm welcome and cooperation received.
