Diverted here (due to thunderstorm) on an early Saturday morning to fuel up. Beautiful and well-maintained airport near a river - quite a sight to see (boat houses and docks) while in the pattern. Unicom responded to my traffic call. Quick service and nice FBO. Will stop here again.

AWOS available on the field, 119.625 or 205-884-4359. Jumpers are gone so Sat & Sun are not quite as busy.

Sammy's is a great restaurant. The fuel service is another story. I pulled up to the pump and no one came out so I fueled my plane and went inside to pay. No one was around. After a few minutes someone came in and said he would call Sammy's to see if someone from the FBO was there. A few minutes later someone came in and asked if he could help me. I told him that I got some fuel and needed to pay for it. He said, "You did, from where?" I told him from the fuel tank out front. He said that they did not really have Self Service. Well they sure don't have full service. As he walked outside he said "I guess there's a gauge on the pump." I was starting to wonder where this guy came from. They could sell more fuel if they installed a self-serve system and lowered the price to be more in line with other airports around. I ended up paying $4.40 a gallon. North at Decatur fuel was only $4.09, $3.80 up here in Kentucky. I won't be buying fuel there again, but I will eat at Sammy's again.

We frequently visit St. Clair, my wife's mother lives in Pell City. Sammy's is another reason and always a good place to eat. The FBO service is fast and courteous, they will hand you the keys to a county-owned crew car in a flash. Last weekend, 3/25, it was a very nice Chevrolet which we used for several hours at no charge. Like many uncontrolled fields, St. Clair is often busy; especially on weekends with a mix of traffic and activities you will not see at controlled fields. Yes, call your position frequently on the Unicom, but remember everyone does not have a radio, nor are they required to. 1. Get down to pattern altitude early, 10 miles out is a good idea. This makes it a lot easier to see traffic. 2. Slow up! Get the gear and flaps down BEFORE you get to the field, 5 miles out works well. 3. Use standard pattern entry and exit points. 4. Keep your eyes open and have your passengers looking too. Have a safe flight Steve

I have flown for 38 years, both military and civilian. I found St. Clair no more dangerous than any other uncontrolled airport. It was a very pleasant trip and beautiful surrounding geography. The Touch & Go restaurant is outstanding. Great food and excellent service. I'll be back.

Nice place to visit but don't plan on being a based customer. Heavy handed Airport Authority runs this place like their personal play ground, evicts paying hangar customers so they can open hangers for their friends, charges to bring the fuel truck to you if you buy less than 10 gallons of gas, adds charges to your monthly hangar if you are an experimental, or don't buy enough fuel from them each month. And generally just gets in every based tenant's face/business at every opportunity. Come to visit Sammies, then run.. run fast. Pretty place being distroyed by politicians.

Yes, St. Clair is a bustling place - what with the restaurant, the skydivers, the location, the flight instruction, and everything else - but it's NOT a dangerous airport. Yes, sometimes guys go in & out without having a radio (or using the one they have), but just keep your eyes open and you'll be fine. They have 2 nicely equipped (and decently priced) 172's for rent, and a heck of a nice restaurant! Try the gumbo!

I highly recommend NOT landing at this airport. They have a high number of NORDO airplanes as well as ultralights. I have been cut off on short final several times and just recently a taildragger did so and was WAY too close for comfort. I called the airport manager (Kim) and have waited a week for a return call but have not gotten one. Apparently she doesn't care even though the office person said they know it's a bad problem. If you land here you take your chances. It's not worth it in my opinion.
