Escalante Airport is a hidden treasure. We flew in from Albuquerque in a Cessna 421 and saw an Aero Commander and Qwest Kodiak parked, so plenty of runway for bigger aircraft but also suitable for small aircraft or bush planes. Fred is a great resource in his airport liaison role. Just call the airport numbers and he will hook you up. The courtesy car works but does not have any air conditioning, so it is hot in the afternoon. The RAF built a camp shelter there, which is out of this world. Water, refrigerator, picnic table, fire pit, and a shelter to lay a cot/sleeping bag on for free. Consider donating to RAF for these excellent facilities. We enjoyed sleeping under the stars and didn't notice any bugs. We flew over Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks. Both are other worldly experiences and an interesting way to view large parks. There is terrain to the immediate east of the runway but generally the approach corridors are clear.

My friend and I in two homebuilts stopped at Escalante for two nights to tour Monument Valley and then head down to the Grand Canyon. Nice little airport with fuel and a very nice "lean to" for the camping area. This Lean to was put in place by the Recreational Aviation Foundation and the Utah Back Country Pilots. Showers also available as well as a nice pilot lounge.
