I visited 58M yesterday (8/15/09). The airport is easy to find from the south. Keep Chesapeake City off your right wing, cross the canal, and head slightly up the Elk River. You'll easily spot 58M off you left wing @ 2500ft. I used runway 13 and found treetops close to 150' off that end of the runway. There is a displaced threshold and a downward slope when you choose 31. No problem if your good with short field procedures. The woman staffing the FBO was very friendly and helpful. I was able to borrow a courtesy van for the 4-mile ride to the local McDonalds. If you're not short on time, I understand that there is a great seafood restaurant at the local marina. 58M have a new FBO building under construction and improvements being made to the taxiway for Rwy 31. Parking area had ample tie down space, and who can beat the $5 tie down fee, when compared with big airport prices. This is a great little airport and I look forward to visiting again.

The owner greeted us on Sunday, and gave us a ride both ways to nearby Dockside restaurant for lunch. He and his wife helped us file IFR back to Leesburg, VA, and were very accommodating. Filing is tough since cell phone reception is spotty: it took forever to get a release because of dropped calls. Use airborne pickups whenever possible.

Fly in there often. Nice people and great A&P at Cecil Aero.

JT's comments are perplexing to me. I flown into 58M many times with no issues. It's a nice place to visit, and the trip to down to Walsh's restaurant on the water is a real treat during the warm months. Yes, it's nestled in trees and might be interesting during high winds, but there are thousands of such airports and I've never had an issue. I've never confused a road for a taxiway here. And my 172 fits just fine on the taxiways.

Awesome airport. Stayed overnight nearby and loved it. A good old-fashioned airport.

Very difficult and potentially hazardous airport. Difficult to distinguish between taxiways and actual roadways that autos use. Poorly planned and designed. Taxiways are narrow and sloping and several of the roads dip very close to retention basins. Prior to take off heard small rifle or shotgun fire of all things in very close proximity. Not a confidence builder. Take offs and landing are quite turbulent. Surrounding area is water or wooded. No emergency options. Runways is noticeably sloped, trees are a factor to consider. Also there is a large house way too close to the only runway. Why someone would build right there I have no idea. No cell phone reception also. Not a good place for an airport. Services are available and I understand the people are friendly. It’s your choice, which is more important.

Flew in on 3-10-08. Very friendly, even let me use crew car for a local errand. Looks like a lot of work being put into this airport - and it shows! I'll definitely be back. Thanks.

Great little airport. Stopped in on 7/28/07 to wait for weather to clear up further north. Very friendly and helpful.

Helpful, friendly staff at the airport--in a picturesque location. Easy to find. Although I would have a healthy respect for the tree lines and grade, don't let them deter you from visiting--they are very manageable. Great visit.
